PEER ASSESSMENT MECHANISM WORKS FOR AFAD 09 December 2015
Member Countries of European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (EFDRR) monitor and assess the implementation of their peers’ Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). This time Peer Assessment Mechanism works for AFAD which is a member of this forum. The assessments commenced on 30th of November in AFAD Center in which 6 volunteered specialists participated from 4 countries, shall be completed with technical visits to be held in AFAD Bursa and AFAD İstanbul on 11 December.
30 November 2015, Ankara/ Peer Assessment Mechanism examine and evaluate the activities of a country in order to reduce the disaster risk by a committee that comprises specialists (5-6) from volunteered countries. This mechanism based on voluntary performance provides sharing of best implementation models on reducing disaster risks with participant countries, and provides contribution in creating a common perception/understanding in this respect and the recommendation outcomes of such assessments are not binding for these countries.
In the Annual Meeting of European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (EFDRR) organized in 2012 member countries gathered and developed “Peer Assessment “ Mechanism in order to better and efficiently progress the monitoring-assessment process of Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) Implementation. Assessment studies shall be performed in sessions which comprise one opening session (30 November, Monday), one closing session (11 December, Friday), thirty technical sessions (1-8 December) and technical visits in seven parts (9-10 December).
The sessions in which total 78 stakeholder institutions shall participate commenced on 30 November at the AFAD Center.
In the opening session which was chaired by Muhammet Serdar Erbaş, the President of Strategy Development Department of AFAD, Deputy Chairman of General Directorate of EU Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Alexander KOPKE stated that they are happy to be in Turkey to get involved in this study and they closely monitor and appreciate the activities of AFAD.
