“Response Capacity of AFAD is Precious for Countries in the Region, too” 27 March 2018
Second phase of the Enhancement of International Cooperation for Development Program was organized on March 20, 2018 with the participation of the Head of AFAD Dr. Mehmet Güllüoğlu and the high level officials of the Balkan countries.
Dr. Güllüoğlu underlined the social and economic destruction created by disasters in his speech.
Noting the importance of increasing response and risk capacity in order to produce a solution, the Head of AFAD Güllüoğlu said that countries should share their experiences with each other.
Güllüoğlu stated that Turkey has close historical, cultural and geographical ties with the Balkan countries adding that, “We believe that the response capacity and the vast knowledge of AFAD is not only precious for Turkey but for all countries in its region.”
Noting that AFAD has been involved in serious activities in order to increase its capacity to respond to disasters since the day of its establishment, Güllüoğlu said that teams with UN International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) certificates are involved in disaster relief activities.
"Nobody can put a price on lives that are saved”
Güllüoğlu underlined that AFAD values measures taken by other countries regarding disasters and went to say the following;
"We know that every lira we spend for decreasing risk is precious by approximately 4-7 times than the money that would be spent after disasters during both response and improvement efforts. Nobody can put a price on lived that are saved. Until today, we have provided awareness during disaster training to more than 9 million people. But, we believe that this figure must be higher in a country with a population of 80 million. Due to this reason, we think it is important for all countries to reach out to every single individual regarding disasters such as floods and earthquakes.”
