Foundation Laid for 403 Earthquake Houses at Samsat 16 April 2018
Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Recep Akdağ, Parliament Deputy Speaker Ahmet Aydın and head of Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority Dr. Mehmet Güllüoğlu attended the foundation laying ceremony for 403 earthquake housing at the Samsat township of the southeastern province of Adıyaman.
In his opening speech Akdağ said the government has launched the 403 houses project for the earthquake stricken area and added “we are now laying the foundations for 403 houses to be given to the families who lost their homes. Yet we have other brothers and sisters who are awaiting similar services. We are also making preparations for them. We have to monetary or financial problems. We also do not have any problems regarding the laws and the regulations. However, we do have problems in finding suitable land to put up the houses. With the will of Allah we will construct these houses this year and hand them to the citizens.”
Akdağ said there are one thousand 740 families who have earned the right to have a home and added “today we are starting to construct houses for 403 families. Very soon we will start Parliament Deputy Speaker Ahmet Aydın said the administration is making calculations so that the 403 families do not spend another winter in disaster containers in Samsat and added “Samsat deserves the best. Samsat is a town that has always supported us as a nation and has proven its loyalty to the state.”
Head of AFAD Dr. Mehmet Güllüoğlu also speaking at the occasion said everyone should be prepared with the notion that the area may be hit by an earthquake “That is why we all have to work hard. You cannot do disaster management unless you minimize the risks of disaster.”
After the speeches the foundations were laid with prayers.
After the earthquake in Samsat on March 2, 2017 that measures 5.5 on the Richter Scale studies were carried out on 2 thousand 195 houses. Authorities discovered that 651 houses in the town center and 779 in the villages were heavily damaged and had to be replaced.
After the quake authorities started work on rebuilding the damaged houses and providing new dwellings for the victims.
Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Akdağ said: ”We must take measures against tsunami waves that are triggered by earthquakes in addition to our preparations against possible earthquakes.” Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Recep Akdağ listed his observations concerning damages and reconstruction projects carried out in Sendai that was hit by earthquake and tsunami disasters in 2001 as a part of his contacts during his Japan visit.“We Must Take Measures Against Risk of Tsunami in Addition to Earthquakes”

Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Recep Akdağ and Head of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) Dr. Mehmet Güllüoğlu met with the Regional AFAD directors of Eastern Anatolia region in Erzurum. During the meeting Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Recep Akdağ summarized the process that commenced since the foundation of AFAD till today. Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has donated food baskets to the Iraqi Turkmen Families in Erbil who have been forced out of their homes and who need help.
