Eastern Anatolia Consultation Meeting 31 May 2018
Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Recep Akdağ and Head of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) Dr. Mehmet Güllüoğlu met with the Regional AFAD directors of Eastern Anatolia region in Erzurum.
During the meeting Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Recep Akdağ summarized the process that commenced since the foundation of AFAD till today.
Underlining major changes throughout the history of AFAD, Prof. Akdağ made the following remarks:
"Today, we have reached a certain level in terms of both being prepared and responding to disasters in Turkey. AFAD as well as other organizations affiliated to AFAD have been working with devotion and have achieved success in coordination during the times of emergencies and disasters. AFAD has proven this by fulfilling its duty properly during earthquakes, terror attacks, explosions and landslides in Turkey and many other incidents abroad. In addition to all these, AFAD has played a major role in providing relief and aid to Syrian refugees and succeeded in this by displaying great responsibility and a notion of duty since now.”
Akdağ said that AFAD has been working on projects that will carry its services to a higher level and added that they have decided to increase the number of volunteers that will work in times of disasters.
Consultation meeting that evaluated the recent activities and planned projects ended with an Iftar dinner.
Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Akdağ said: ”We must take measures against tsunami waves that are triggered by earthquakes in addition to our preparations against possible earthquakes.” Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Recep Akdağ listed his observations concerning damages and reconstruction projects carried out in Sendai that was hit by earthquake and tsunami disasters in 2001 as a part of his contacts during his Japan visit.“We Must Take Measures Against Risk of Tsunami in Addition to Earthquakes”
Deputy Chairman of Japan-Turkey Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group İchiro Aisawa stated, "We had the opportunity to work more intensively with Turkey in recent years about the fight against natural disasters and emergency planning. Turkey is a very experienced country regarding disasters. We want to involve in information, experience and technology transfer between the two countries.”Japanese Delegation Visits AFAD

The Earthquake Symposium organized by AFAD on the occasion of Earthquake Week between March 1-7 was held with the participation of Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Recep Akdağ. The humanitarian aid campaign for the people of Palestine who came under heavy attack by the Israeli army during demonstrations in the Gaza border area, recorded in history as “Bloody Monday”, is now underway. The promotion meeting of “Be Hope for Palestine” aid campaign organized under the coordination of the Prime Minister Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and attended by representatives of the Turkish Red Crescent, the Turkish Diyanet Foundation and a number of nongovernmental organizations as well as Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Recep Akdağ was held at the Prime Ministry General Directorate of State Archives Ottoman Archive Department.
