AFAD Displays Its Technological Capacity at the Teknofest 28 September 2018
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) attended TEKNOFEST 2018, Turkey’s first aviation, space and technology festival. AFAD showing its capacity at its 500 meter square larege stand, displayed its technological abilities to the visitors. Technologies such as earthquake simulation, interactive earthquake hazard map and VR (Virtual Reality) were offered to the use of visitors.
AFAD welcomed the guests with the question “Would like to Observe How We Are Preoaring for Disasters?” at the festival organized by Turkish Technology Team (T3 Foundation) and İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The AFAD stand that had a special place due to its size and activities received great interest from the visitors regardless of their age.
Technology Density Studies Promoted
Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) experts of AFAD with their special protection clothes greeted the guests, rescue dogs performed shows during the festival in addition to promotion of technological projects. Disaster Management Decision Support System (AYDES), Use of Crowd Source and Remote Perception projects were promoted and visitors were presented with leaflets explaining these activities. Printed “New Earthquake Hazard Map” and brochures were the center of attraction of teachers and students. Visitors had the opportunity to interactively use Turkish Earthquake Hazard Map shared via e-state application.
Variety of Activities at AFAD Stand
In addition to promotions, many different activities were organized at the AFAD stand at the Teknofest. Children and young people had the opportunity to have fun and participate in sports activities on the training ground. Children held on to the ropes at the beginning of the route, walked on the balancing bars, passed through a tunnel and climbed the climbing wall.
AFAD’s Search and Rescue and Training Capacity at Teknofest
Zet and Zeto, search and rescue expert K9 dogs of AFAD staged performances for the visitors. Children wandered around the festival area with the 8x8 amphibious Search and Rescue vehicle. Students experienced earthquake tremors at the mobile earthquake simulation unit. They leant what to do before and after the earthquake. Young visitors passed through an awareness test at the mobile training center.
The AFAD’s stand at the Teknofest also included a small model of a temporary refugee center in Suruç. The event ended on September 23.

Mehmet Savaş Polat and other TDV executives visited the Disaster and Emergency Training Center (AFADEM) and received “Basic Disaster Awareness Training.” The Deputy Head of Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) İsmail Palakoğlu greeted the TDV delegation made up of deputy general directos and unit directors of the organization. The theme AFAD elected for August 17 commemoration ceremony is “Being Prepared…” Within this context, “August 17 Earthquake Commemoration Activities” will be held in İstanbul’s Sultanahmet Square.
