Escaping New Wave of Violence, Syrian Refugees March to Turkish Border Regime assaults and airstrikes in Northwestern Syria trigger new refugee wave as Turkey welcomes more than 3600 refugees. Hatay, 1 February 2016 – Russian airstrikes and regime attacks against the Yamadi refugee camp near the Turkish-Syrian border displaced thousands of predominantly Turkmen families, the first of whom entered Turkey on 29 January. Within four days, the number of arrivals reached 3648.

Listening to the Northern Anatolia Fault’s Heartbeats Turkey’s first deep-well seismometer network monitors microquakes in an effort to find clues about the next major earthquake. Ankara, 8 February 2016 – After three years of hard work, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has completed Turkey’s first deep-well seismometer network which monitors the Northern Anatolia fault around the clock to collect scientific data and listen to the footsteps of the next major earthquake in the country. The network features seven monitoring centers located 300 meters below ground.

AFAD Expert Attends OECD Summit in Washington, DC AFAD expert attends OECD summit to discuss AFKEN project and World Humanitarian Summit Washington, 10 December 2015 – At a formal meeting of one hundred disaster management experts and private sector representatives from 34 OECD countries, Dr. Yeliz Teker of AFAD’s Department of Planning and Mitigation gave a presentation on the agency’s risk reduction efforts and Turkey’s response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria. “We must promote multilateral dialogue in order to develop effective solutions,” she told the High Level Risk Forum. “We are prepared to share our experiences with the world.”

HFA Peer Review Completed AFAD Chief delivers closing address at 8-day peer review session in Ankara, where 78 representatives from government, private sector and NGOs participated. Ankara, 9 December 2015 – The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) hosted the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (EFDRR) Peer Review in Ankara. During the event, 78 participants presented their activities to six European experts over 32 sessions and eight days.
