Turkey’s Humanitarian Aid in Afrin - Report No: 1 (24.03.2018) 24 March 2018
In the framework of Operation Olive Branch that was launched on January 20, Turkey has not only established security and stability in the areas that were previously under the control of terrorist organization PYD/YPG/DAESH but also delivered humanitarian aid to the people living in these areas. Since the beginning of the operation, Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), Turkish Red Crescent and some other Turkish NGOs have provided humanitarian aid to the people in need at 55 different locations in Afrin.

Turkish aid agencies distribute food to Afrin civilians 20 March 2018

Disaster and Emergency Management Authority and Turkey's Red Crescent distributed hot meals to civilians in Syria's Afrin, which was liberated during the ongoing Operation Olive Branch. Mehmet Güllüoğlu, the head of Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), and Ibrahim Altan, head of the Turkish Red Crescent Society, also took part during the distribution of meals in villages of Diwan Al Fawqani and Deir Ballut.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) was awarded with the “Positive Institution of the Year” as a part of the “9th RADEV Positive Awards Ceremony” organized by the Association of Radio House. Deputy Head of AFAD Hamza Taşdelen received the award on the behalf of Head of AFAD Dr. Mehmet Güllüoğlu during the ceremony organizedat the National Library.

The Syrian Crisis that directly that affected the future of many countries and their citizens in general and Turkey in particular is at its 8th year. 3.5 million Syrians took shelter in our country due to the migration flow trigged as a result of the civil war that broke out in March 2011. Upon the direction of our President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, we have implemented an “Open Door” policy since the first day. We did not turn down those who sought shelter under the shadow of our flag. We did not ask the identities of those who were oppressed. The cost of our Syrian guests to Turkey has exceeded 30 billion dollars by 2018. When we compare this figure with the national incomes of other countries, we can say that “We are the most generous country in the world.”

The field hospital established by Turkey for the Muslim Arakan refugees in Bangladesh delivered its first baby. The first baby boy to be born at the field hospital jointly set up by AFAD and the Turkish Ministry of Health at Cox’s Bazar area was named Muhammed Alperen.

Feb. 16, 2018 The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi and a UNHCR delegation visited the Head of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) Dr. Mehmet Güllüoğlu in his office. Head of AFAD Dr. Güllüoğlu expressed his appreciation over the visit of Filippo Grandi and the UNHCR delegation and stated that there are similarities between the crisis experienced in Bangladesh and Syria and that Turkey attaches great importance not only to the Syrians but to all refugees around the globe and carries out daily monitoring activities about the crisis in Myanmar within this context.

Feb.08. 2018. Minister of Culture and Tourism Prof. Dr. Numan Kurtulmuş visited the refugee camps founded in Cox’s Bazar city of Bangladesh to meet with the Arakan Muslims. Minister Kurtulmuş who inspected the Mobile Field Hospital founded by the Ministry of Health and the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) in the camp, joint aid distribution point of The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), Turkish Red Crescent and Diyanet Foundation and TİKA kitchen, received information about projects carried out by Turkey to offer its helping hand at the refugee camps.
