AFAD’s President in Philippines with Deputy Prime Minister 11 November 2013

There is a great number of loss of life and property owing to Haiyan Typhoon that affected center of Philippines on the dates of 8 – 9 November 2013.
According to the information received from United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 4.3 million people have been affected by typhoon, approximately 330.000 people became homeless, especially in Tacloban % 90 of buildings were damaged and potable water, food and electricity shortage has arised in Philippines.
Haiyan Typhoon that has started in Pacific Ocean on the date of 5 November 2013, has been effective in Philippines on the date of 8 – 9 November and because of typhoon which it’s speed reached 235 km/h, thousand of people have been evacuated.
Although death of 10.000 people has appeared on the news in press, Government of Philippines announced that 229 people died, 45 people wounded and 28 people got lost formally. Philippines Red Cross pronounced that at least 1.200 people died in typhoon.
Islands of Tacloban, Visayas, Iloilo, Pontevedra, Capiz and Roxas are the most affected regions by disaster. Humanitarian relief will be supplied to these regions especially.
Totally 9.5 million people have been suffered by typhoon in 36 provinces, 435.701 people have been sheltering in 1.458 evacuation centers. 182.474 people have need sheltering immediately.
3.438 buildings have damaged completely or partially in total and 17 highways and 1 bridge has affected. Also Visayas Airport has closed to traffic.
DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND AFAD’S PRESIDENT HELD A PRESS CONFERENCE BEFORE RELIEF AIRCRAFT TAKE OFF
Because of typhoon in Philippines, in line with H.E. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN’s directive, in the coordination of AFAD, 65 tons humanitarian aid materials that composed of 550 tents, 550 kitchen kit and 5.125 blankets, were prepared by Turkish Red Crescent and sent to disaster area via Turkish Airlines’ cargo aircraft.
Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Beşir ATALAY and AFAD’s President Dr. Fuat OKTAY held a press conference at Esenboğa Airport, Ankara before relief aircraft take off that coordinated by AFAD in cooperation with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Turkish Airlines and Turkish Red Crescent.
In conference, Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Beşir ATALAY said that because of Haiyan Typhoon 65 tons humanitarian aid materials including tents, blankets, kitchen kit and other supplies, had sent to Philippines.
Deputy Prime Minister indicated that according to the information received from UN approximately 4.5 million people had affected by typhoon, 330.000 people had lost their homes, potable water, food and electricity shortage had arised in Philippines and there was a disaster of epic proportion in the country.
There is no certain information about loss of lives, Philippines Red Cross announced that a lot of people between 1.200 and 1.300 had died ATALAY said and he pointed out that Prime Minister H.E. Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN wished Head of State of Philippines get well via telegraph and got ready for all kinds of relief as Turkey.
Deputy Prime Minister said as follows in his speech:
“ Prime Minister H.E. Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN telegraphed his condolence to Head of State of Philippines Benigno AGUINO III for typhoon that caused a great number of loss of lives and financial damage on a large scale.
H.E. Prime Minister stated his deep sadness on behalf of himself, government and beloved Turkish Nation for loss of life and property and added that Turkey was in solidarity with Philippines Nation in his telegraph.
Moreover Prime Minister H.E. Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN emphasized that because of this disaster Turkey got ready for all kinds of humanitarian relief to Philippines Government.”
Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Beşir ATALAY continued his speech as follows:
“AFAD has been working since the morning. Aid materials including tent, blanket, kitchen kit and other required materials that were provided by Turkish Red Crescent, and their weight is 65 tons in total. These humanitarian aid materials are sent by Airbus 330 cargo aircraft. Other relief materials may be needed a lot more. We will determine these requirements there and supply by AFAD and TİKA.”
Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Beşir ATALAY answered the question of reporter as “Will you sent search and rescue team?” as follows:
“We convey team for distribution of humanitarian relief. Also one search and rescue team is stand by in İstanbul. If Government of Philippines call for help,we will convey.”
ATALAY said that he would go to Philippines with AFAD’s President Dr. Fuat OKTAY, Director General of Turkish Red Crescent Ahmet Lütfi AKAR and his team were in Australia and they would go to disaster area from there. Beşir ATALAY added that relief aircraft would land to Philippines at 04.00 pm on Monday and aid materials would be delivered to needers expeditiously.
After press conference Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Beşir ATALAY and AFAD’s President Dr. Fuat OKTAY flied to Philippines.

(29 May 2013) 9 scullery containers which were provided by Japanese Government and International Organization For Migration (IOM) sent to Mardin in coordination with AFAD.
