"Turkey Leads the World in Man-Made Disasters" 16 March 2015
AFAD Chief shares Turkey's experiences with natural and man-made disasters with WCDRR participants in Sendai, Japan.
Participating at the opening session of the Third World Disaster Risk Reduction Conference in Japan, AFAD President Dr. Fuat Oktay shared some of Turkey's experiences with natural, man-made and technological disasters to note that "100 percent of the nation's schools will have become disaster-resilient by the year 2018."
Reminding UN member states and the press corps that the country has already taken necessary steps to prepare approximately 70 percent of its schools for disasters, Dr. Oktay pointed out that AFAD put a significant amount of work into developing the Disaster Response System of Turkey, a nationwide project that organizes government agencies and civil society into 28 task forces with clearly-defined mandates and responsibilities.
The Turkish delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş, will participate in 36 events at the five-day event. UN officials in Sendai indicate that the Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction will presumably attract over 4,000 participants from 186 countries.

Deputy Chairman of Japan-Turkey Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group İchiro Aisawa stated, "We had the opportunity to work more intensively with Turkey in recent years about the fight against natural disasters and emergency planning. HFA Peer Review Completed AFAD Chief delivers closing address at 8-day peer review session in Ankara, where 78 representatives from government, private sector and NGOs participated. Ankara, 9 December 2015 – The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) hosted the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (EFDRR) Peer Review in Ankara. During the event, 78 participants presented their activities to six European experts over 32 sessions and eight days.
