"Turkey Leads the World in Man-Made Disasters"

AFAD Chief shares Turkey's experiences with natural and man-made disasters with WCDRR participants in Sendai, Japan.

Participating at the opening session of the Third World Disaster Risk Reduction Conference in Japan, AFAD President Dr. Fuat Oktay shared some of Turkey's experiences with natural, man-made and technological disasters to note that "100 percent of the nation's schools will have become disaster-resilient by the year 2018."

Reminding UN member states and the press corps that the country has already taken necessary steps to prepare approximately 70 percent of its schools for disasters, Dr. Oktay pointed out that AFAD put a significant amount of work into developing the Disaster Response System of Turkey, a nationwide project that organizes government agencies and civil society into 28 task forces with clearly-defined mandates and responsibilities.

The Turkish delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş, will participate in 36 events at the five-day event. UN officials in Sendai indicate that the Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction will presumably attract over 4,000 participants from 186 countries.
