Government officials, NGOs mark the 2011 earthquake’s fourth anniversary in Van
Van, 23 October 2015 – Former Deputy Prime MinisterBeşir Atalay,Governorİbrahim Taşyapan andAFAD President Dr. Fuat Oktay joined non-governmental organizations and survivors to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the 2011 Van Earthquake and reflect on the rebuilding efforts in the affected area.
Speaking at the event, Mr.Atalay told the audience that the disaster had caused “indescribable” pain to the city and recalled that then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğanand several cabinet members had reached the disaster zone within hours. “Only a few times in my life have I seen an entire nation unite over an issue,” Atalay said. “The authorities provided assistance to the community, but ordinary people shipped so much aid that we barely had room to store all the supplies. We all should take pride in this sense of solidarity.”
Noting that Turkey spent $2 billion to construct 25,186 housing units for the community, AFAD President Dr. Oktay praised the strong cooperation between the central government, local authorities, NGOs and the community – which, he said, made the reconstruction of devastated areas possible.
