AFAD Chief delivers closing address at 8-day peer review session in Ankara, where 78 representatives from government, private sector and NGOs participated.
Ankara, 9 December 2015 – The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) hosted the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (EFDRR) Peer Review in Ankara. During the event, 78 participants presented their activities to six European experts over 32 sessions and eight days. The delegation will visit AFAD’s local offices in Istanbul and Bursa prior to their departure.
Delivering the closing address on Wednesday, AFAD President Dr. Fuat Oktay stated that “Turkey became a member of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism with an eye on the broader goal of becoming Europe’s leading country in disaster management.

Janet Edwards, international coordinator for the Swedish national platform for disaster risk reduction, praised AFAD’s “successful work in disaster management” and said that “Swedish officials, faced with a refugee crisis, would like to visit the refugee camps in Turkey in order to learn from the country’s experiences.”
