Transformer Explosion in The Coal Mine in Soma, Manisa
AFAD Emergency Management Center has received a report that a transformer had exploded, set coal mine up on fire and miners have been stuck in coal mine, in Soma, Manisa on Tuesday, 13 May 2014 at 15.10 pm.
AFAD’s President Dr. Fuat OKTAY, arrived at scene of accident soon after explosion with Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner YILDIZ. AFAD’s President is coordinating search and rescue operations in person in Soma and following progressions closely.
Search and rescue operations, health and logistics services are still being carried out by contribution of all institutions of Turkey in coordination of AFAD.
476 Search and Rescue Personnel
Total 476 Search and Rescue Personnel including 16 expert personnel who have specialized in search and rescue in mining from Turkish Hardcoal Institution were dispatched to Soma with their 300 kg. equipment by air. Search and rescue personnel who were also routed from AFAD provincial directorates which is located in Manisa, İzmir, Balıkesir, Uşak, Denizli, Afyon, Sakarya, National Medical Rescue Team (UMKE) and 112 Emergency Squad.
206 Vehicle and 2326 Personnel in Total
1850 support personnel and overhead personnel are in Soma in order to support rescue activities in addition to search and rescue staff from AFAD, General Staff, Family and Social Politics, Presidency of Religious Affairs, Municipalities of Manisa, İzmir, Balıkesir, Uşak and Denizli.
Search and rescue operations and psychosocial rehabilitation activities are being kept on with 206 vehicles, containing 52 road ambulances, an ambulance helicopter and a mobile coordination vehicle.
GSM operators which are in service in Turkey established 10 mobile base stations to provide uninterrupted communication service. Moreover, other needed materials and equipments was installed in the area like 2 trucking rig equipped with toilet, shower and sleeping quarter from Sakarya governorship, 3 unit shelter for general usage and mobile toilet with a capacity of 6 person from İzmir and Afyon AFAD provincial directorates; 17 shelter for general usage, 400 blankets, 4 generator, 2 compressor, 1 lighting unit, 1 mobile kitchen, 2500 boot and waistcoat, 2.750 viaticum and 44.870 nourishment.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency is the sole competent authority concerning disasters and emergencies, and works like an umbrella organization, collaborating with the Turkish General Staff, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Forests and Hydraulic Works and other relevant ministries as well as non-governmental organizations, depending on the nature and magnitude of the disaster or emergency.

In the aftermath of flood that hit Fatsa, Perşembe, Çaybaşı and Ünye districts of Ordu province, intervention and rehabilitation activities continue under the coordination of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
