Minister of European Union and Chief Negotiator H.E. Egemen BAĞIŞ welcomed Our Director – General Dr. Fuat OKTAY. Syria crisis and the living condition of Syrian citizens who live in Turkey dominated the talks in the meeting on 16 July 2013 Tuesday.
Minister of European Union and Chief Negotiator Egemen BAĞIŞ pointed out that violence has been continuing in Syria and international actors had still not take concrete steps about Syria crisis. BAĞIŞ said that half a million Syrian citizens who live in Turkey are in peace and added:
“Turkey spent 1.5 billion USD for Syrian guests who had came to our country. Only 116 million USD of this was provided by foreign resources. Unfortunately only 6.9 million of this had sent by EU and EU member countries.
Director - General of AFAD requested us to make a recall to our European partners to take more responsibility about Syria crisis. We embraced this important mission. We will try to focus the EU member countries’ attention on requirements of Syrian citizens and Syria crisis in coordination with Prime Minister Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency through contacts with EU member countries.”
Director - General of AFAD, Dr. Fuat OKTAY pointed out that, as of today, there are 21 accommodation centers which all integrated schools, hospitals and food services and also said that, “there are almost 30 thousands students and a thousand six hundred teachers. More than 1 million 300 thousands amblatory care services were provided in camp hospitals, more than 225 thousands amblatory care services were provided in hospitals which are full-fledged hospitals in city centers, totally more than 25 thousands surgical operations were performed.”
Director - General of AFAD, Dr. Fuat OKTAY also gave information about international relief for Syrian Citizens and said as follows:
As of today valued at 116 million dollars aid was donated from international community. 50 million dollars of this aid came from Saudi Arabia, valued at 45 million dollars contributions in kind came from United Nations. Remained 6.9 million dollars distributed as follows: Austria 25 thousands dollars, France 145 thousands dollars, German Red Cross 500 thousands dollars, Sweden Red Cross 245 thousands dollars, British Red Cross 1.500 million dollars, Holland Red Cross 2,46 million dollars, Norway Red Cross 1.6 million dollars and 650 thousands dollars for building school from Belgium.
(April 18, 2013) Accommodation, food, health and education needs of Syrians in 17 camps in 8 provinces of Turkey are met by the coordination of AFAD. In Syrian camps, ambulatory care service is offered 5 thousand per day on average. So far, 1 million Syrian citizens were treated and more than 3 thousand childbirths were given. In order to contribute to health services provided by AFAD and Ministry of Health, a cooperation protocol was signed with “Saudi Arabia Humanitarian Aid Union for Syria” on September 28, 2012. Within the scope of this protocol, 10 ambulances provided by Humanitarian Aid Union were sent to their regions with a sendoff ceremony. 4 of the ambulances will serve in Sanliurfa, 4 of them will be in Kilis and other 2 ambulances will serve in camps in Gaziantep. (02 October 2013) President of AFAD Dr. Fuat OKTAY was in Genevia, Switzerland for participation to 64.th Executive Committee Meeting of United Nations High Commission of Refugees at last Monday. (April 10, 2013) Delegation of European Union to Turkey Head of Operations Wolfgang SCHLAEGER with accompanying delegation visited AFAD and met AFAD’s Director General Fuat OKTAY in his office on April 10, 2013. At the meeting, Mr. SCHLAEGER expressed their desire to work more closely and increase the cooperation with AFAD. He also stated that during the cooperation process between EU and Turkey in the period of 2014-2020, disaster management is seen as a matter of priority. He said that under the condition of disaster management issue have been included into the prior sectors’ list and Development Plans of Turkey, EU would intensify its financial and technical support to Turkey.
