Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Beşir ATALAY Welcomed Valerie AMOS 11 June 2013

Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Beşir ATALAY got together with United Nations Under Secretary Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie AMOS in our Presidency.
In the framework of the meeting, Joint Action Plan Protocol was signed by Presidency and United Nations Office for the Humanitarian Affairs. Director General Dr. Fuat OKTAY and Valerie AMOS signed protocol that aimed to develop collaboration spheres between AFAD and UN OCHA.
Protocol signed for 3 years between 2013 -2015, has aimed to get technical support from UN OCHA for Seismic Risk Reduction Center of Excellence whose construction activities have been continuing. This protocol is also aimed to increase the cooperation among parties with regard to international disaster management system.
Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Beşir ATALAY made a speech on activities of Turkey related to struggling with disaster. Mr. ATALAY who talked about Training Campaign as part of Public Disaster Awareness Project, indicated that they would get technical support from UN as well as share experiences of Turkey through the protocol.
After the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Beşir ATALAY gave information about Syrian citizens who live in Turkey. He said that there were 17 accommodation centers and 3 of them were container cities, 2 new accommodation centers would be built with the coordination of AFAD. Mr. ATALAY pointed out that as of today there were 187.693 Syrian citizens in our accommodation centers, furthermore there were some Syrian citizens who lived in out of camps with their own’s means and their health care costs had been covered by State. Besides, Beşir ATALAY mentioned that Turkey had not get a sufficient financial support from UN and added as follows:
“ We have spent substantially, we talked to her about it.”
Also Deputy Prime Minister Beşir ATALAY answered the questions of members of press and pointed out Turkey’s expenditures for Syrian citizens, had reached 600 million USD and were covered by budget.
UN Under Secretary Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valeire AMOS appreciated and thanked Turkey and AFAD because of activities for Syrian citizens. Valerie AMOS said that increase the number of Syrians who ran out of their country was an indicator of the growth of crisis in Syria and they would give all kind of support to Syrian citizens who live in accommodation centers till the problem was over.
