AFAD Chief Attends THO Event on Refugee Crisis
AFAD President Dr. Fuat Oktay attends a public event on the Syrian refugee crisis hosted by the Turkish Heritage Organization in Washington, D.C.
Washington D.C., 5 March 2016 – AFAD President Dr. Fuat Oktay on Friday participated in a teleconference hosted by the Turkish Heritage Organization, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization seeking to promote dialogue around Turkey’s role in the international community.
Sharing Turkey’s experiences with participants, Dr. Oktay called on policy-makers in the United States to more actively contribute to humanitarian relief efforts in Syria.
Dr. Nora Fisher Onar, a fellow at the Transatlantic Academy, and UCLA historian James Gelvin also spoke at the event.
Europe Praises Turkey’s Humanitarian Efforts The European Commission’s 2015 Progress Report on Turkey hailed the country’s humanitarian relief efforts, which AFAD coordinates, as ”unprecedented” and ”vital.” Ankara, 11 November 2015 -- The European Commission published the 2015 Progress Report on Turkey to praise the country’s efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Syria and across the Middle East. HFA Peer Review Completed AFAD Chief delivers closing address at 8-day peer review session in Ankara, where 78 representatives from government, private sector and NGOs participated. Ankara, 9 December 2015 – The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) hosted the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (EFDRR) Peer Review in Ankara. During the event, 78 participants presented their activities to six European experts over 32 sessions and eight days. (11 - 12 November 2013) Humanitarian aid supplies sent by Turkish Prime Ministry AFAD reached to typhoon-ravaged Philippines.
