Top Earthquake Experts Meet in Istanbul
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Turkey (AFAD) is proud to co-host the Second European Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (2ECEES) with the Turkish Earthquake Foundation on 24-29 August 2014 in Istanbul, Turkey. The event brings together top earthquake and seismology experts from Turkey and across the world on the 15th anniversary of the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake of August 17, 1999.
2ECEES is a joint gathering of the European Association of Earthquake Engineering (EAEE) and the European Seismological Commission (ESC), which will feature 13 keynote speakers, 40 thematic lectures, 750 oral- and 800 poster presentations. The event marks the first time that Turkey, which ESC President Alexey Zavyalov describes as "the country of high seismic activity and rich seismic history," will host a meeting of the General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission. Dr. Murat Nurlu, the head of AFAD's Earthquake Department who also serves as Vice President of the ESC, will also be attending this international event.
AFAD, Turkey's top authority on disaster and emergency relief, has embarked on an ambitious plan, the Disaster Response Plan of Turkey (TAMP), over the past years to facilitate cooperation between various government agencies and relief organizations in order to use the nation's resources efficiently and to provide an effective response for victims. With 27 logistical storage units in 15 provinces, AFAD proudly secures the nation's future and protects lives through risk management.
Deputy Prime Minister Beşir Atalay and AFAD President Dr. Fuat Oktay will attend the public ceremony on Monday, 25 August to deliver the opening address and welcome the experts to Turkey.

AFAD Delivers Medical Supplies to Quake-Struck Afghanistan In the wake of a 7.5-magnitude earthquake, AFAD ships 5 tons of medical supplies to Afghanistan. Kabul, 2 November 2015 -- The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) delivered five tons of medical supplies to Afghanistan, which was struck by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake on 26 October. HFA Peer Review Completed AFAD Chief delivers closing address at 8-day peer review session in Ankara, where 78 representatives from government, private sector and NGOs participated. Ankara, 9 December 2015 – The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) hosted the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (EFDRR) Peer Review in Ankara. During the event, 78 participants presented their activities to six European experts over 32 sessions and eight days.
